‘Save our trees, save us‘ visual was originally created by Anthea Missy to support the local community of Ixelles in Brussels where Anthea lives. She’s founded a group called Mixelles, together with local activists who wish to make their neighbourhood greener and a friendlier place to live in.
The team has launched a petition calling to co creation of urban space with a more inclusive style between citizens and the government. The visual has then served to their awareness campaign and was pasted in the area. A large collage of ‘Save our trees’ was also pasted on the main square called Place Fernand Cocq, on the window of a popular pub that recently closed due to gentrification of the area and despite hundreds of signatures to keep it active. In the same period of the winter 2018, Anthea was invited to IPAF festival in Cape Town, South Africa, where she painted the Save our trees, save us ‘ large mural down in popular Salt River area.
The artist chose to highlight trees awareness connected to the recent Tokai forest events involving hundreds of citizens who fought to save their precious forest even though they were eventually chopped down. “Trees help us breathe better air and make us feel more balanced. If people express a need to live and be surrounded by more biodiversity, it should be possible to find a consensus with the politicians and co-create a new public space tomorrow.”
